NRB | NRB Hosts 2017 Capitol Hill Media Summit for President’s Council

Members of the NRB President’s Council gathered in Washington, D.C., last week for the 2017 Capitol Hill Media Summit, and were presented with an insider’s perspective of the nation’s capital.

During the September 13-15 event, the council members heard from Ralph Reed, Founder & Chairman of the Faith & Freedom Coalition; Rev. Jamie Johnson, who leads the Center for Faith-Based & Neighborhood Partnerships at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security; David Brody, the Chief Political Correspondent for CBN News; and U.S. Senator James Lankford (R-Okla.), who received NRB’s 2017 Faith & Freedom Award. They also met with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and FCC Chairman Ajit Pai.

On the opening night of the summit, Reed revisited what happened on Election Day 2016, and shared his insights on what decided the outcome of the election.

Later that evening, council members attended the presentation of NRB’s 2017 Faith & Freedom Award to U.S. Senator James Lankford (R-Okla.), who chairs the Senate Subcommittee on Regulatory Affairs and Federal Management.

In accepting the award, Lankford said he was “incredibly honored to receive this award from a great organization like the National Religious Broadcasters.”

“The work done by its members is extremely important to providing a message of hope and love to millions of Americans on a daily basis,” he added.

The following morning, Johnson from Homeland Security talked to the council about his journey from pastor to broadcaster to public servant. He also gave an update on the situations in Texas and Florida following the landfalls of Hurricane Harvey and Irma, respectively.

“In whatever neighborhood we would visit, into whatever home we would be invited by the owner, there were dozens and dozens, and scores and hundreds and thousands of volunteers who had given up one week, two weeks, three weeks, four to help fellow Americans whom they had never met and may never meet again because the love of Christ compelled them to love their neighbor as themselves. This is the power of the faith community,” Johnson shared.

Later in the afternoon, Brody from CBN talked about President Trump – in particular his interactions with his fellow New Yorker. He also talked about his upcoming book on the faith of President Trump, and fielded questions from the council members.

Before Brody’s talk, summit participants met with U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in his Capitol office. Afterward, they met with FCC Chairman Ajit Pai, who tweeted after the meeting that he was “[gr]rateful for the good work @NRBAssociation members do across the country.”

Also part of the 2017 Capitol Hill Media Summit was a tour of the construction site of the Museum of the Bible, a 430,000-square-foot international museum dedicated to the impact, history, and narrative of the Bible. Scheduled to open in November, the museum is located just two blocks from the National Mall and three blocks from the Capitol. Using cutting-edge technology, Museum of the Bible will provide guests with an immersive, personalized, and unparalleled experience as they engage with the Bible. During Proclaim 18, the NRB International Christian Media Convention in Nashville, Tennessee, Museum of the Bible will provide Convention attendees with a taste of its eight-floor facility in Washington. Museum of the Bible is also the Platinum Sponsor for the 2018 Convention, to be held February 27-March 2, 2018.
