Washington Business Journal | Equinox owners to open spot in Bible museum; New Japanese restaurant for Petworth

Equinox owners Todd Gray and Ellen Kassoff Gray will open a full-service restaurant and a more casual cafe and grab-and-go eatery in the forthcoming Museum of the Bible near the National Mall, according to Washingtonian.

The restaurant, which will feature Israeli street food, will be called Manna, and the café Milk & Honey, Washingtonian reported. The 400,000-square-foot museum at 409 Third St. NW will be located in the former home of the Washington Design Center.

The Grays, who worked together on a cookbook, “The New Jewish Table,” that blends their Christian and Jewish upbringings, told Washingtonian they were attracted to the project because the museum tells a historical story that isn’t driven by one particular denomination.

The museum is expected to open in 2017.

Himistu: This Japanese-inspired restaurant from chef Kevin Tien and beverage director Carlie Steiner opens Friday at 828 Upshur St. NW. The space, which was home to Cappy’s Crabs pop-up this summer, previously housed Crane & Turtle, one of the most popular restaurants of 2016. (The space opened up when Crane & Turtle’s chefs, Makoto Mamamura and Katy Kinch, decided to move to New York.) The restaurant will feature cocktails from Steiner and a Japanese-influenced menu, including some sushi, from Tien.

On Rye: Chinatown is getting a new take on the Jewish deli come Nov. 11 with On Rye, which will open at 740 Sixth St. NW. The deli, which aims to make lighter versions of traditional deli staples, comes from Ilyse Fishman Lerner. The 2,550-square-foot space seats 60 and will offer Wagyu corned beef, Wagyu pastrami and roasted turkey breast, as well as a wide range of Reuben sandwiches from the traditional to a vegetarian option with roasted portobello and charred broccoli. For dessert, Lerner will offer babka ice cream sandwiches, black and white cookies and babka French toast.

The Bird: The latest offering from Logan Circle-centric EatWellDC restaurant group, The Bird, opened Oct. 31 at 1337 11th St. NW. The restaurant features poultry of all kinds, from foie gras to duck carpaccio to good old chicken wings — though the plan is to add as many different fowl, from squab to goose to ostrich, as the menu evolves. Cocktails come from beverage director Kyle McNeel. EatWell also owns Logan Tavern, Commissary and The Pig.
