Fox News contributor Guy Benson is going viral for a video in which he talks about being a gay Christian conservative.
“When it comes to my political beliefs, my orientation is only one part of the story. It’s not the totality of who I am,” Benson said in the video for Prager University. “Some unimaginative leftists like to believe this qualifies me as a self-hating gay person. This is so boring.”
He said people are far too often sorted by their gender, skin color, sexual orientation or other characteristics that have nothing to do with ideas or values.
“Let’s debate issues and stop trying to punish ‘wrong thinking,'” Benson said. “I’m a Christian, a patriotic American and a free-market, shrink-the-government conservative who happens to be gay. That’s how I choose to rank my priorities. You know what that’s called? It’s called progress.”
On “Fox & Friends,” Benson said his worldview and values are shaped by many things, and his sexuality is just one element of that.
“I just see so many people who are not just gay, but who are black and conservative or Hispanic and conservative, women, who get so much heat because they don’t shoehorn their beliefs into this little, tiny box that the identity politics left insists that they ought to inhabit. I think that’s wrong, and I wanted to speak out on that.”
He said he wanted conservatives who are members of the LGBT or other minority communities to know that they are not alone.
“There are millions of us out there, and it’s up to each of us to decide what our political priorities are and who we are as people,” Benson said.
