Evangelical leader Dr. James Dobson issued his endorsement today for Donald Trump to take on pro-abortion activists Hillary Clinton. Dobson said Trump would name judges to the Supreme Court who would respect the Constitution and would “defend the sanctity of human life.”
The Focus on the Family founder released his endorsement on Thursday, hours before Trump was set to take the stage to accept his party’s nomination.
“I am endorsing Donald J. Trump not only because of my apprehensions about Hillary Clinton and the damage she would inflict on this great country,” stated Dobson, who now leads the Family Talk radio program. “I am also supporting Mr. Trump because I believe he is the most capable candidate to lead the United States of America in this complicated hour.”
“Most evangelicals I know have decided for various reasons that they will really have only have one choice for president, and that is Donald J. Trump. I believe it’s a good choice. America needs strong and competent leadership,” he said.
Dobson said Trump has been “unwavering in his commitment to issues that are important to evangelicals such as myself.” He pointed to Trump’s promises to “appoint conservative Supreme Court justices, preserve religious liberty, rebuild the military and defend the sanctity of human life.”
Donson says he accepts Trump’s conversion to the pro-life perspective on abortion.
“On the issue of abortion, I choose not to evaluate him based on his past position but rather on what he says are his current convictions. I believe God can change the hearts and minds of people and I celebrate when they support principles of righteousness,” he said.
Hearing Trump’s children talk about their father also was a deciding factor, he said.
“As a psychologist and a family counselor, I have spent my life equipping and resourcing families,” he said. “One thing I have observed is that you cannot make a child talk about his or her parents the way Donald Trump’s children speak of him. That is one of a man’s most significant affirmations.”
