US President Donald Trump received a “Friends of Zion Award” on Tuesday, in a White House ceremony attended by Vice President Mike Pence and Jared Kushner, reported the Jerusalem Post.
Trump was presented with the award by founder of Jerusalem-based Friends of Zion Museum, Mike Evans, who hailed the president’s support for Israel as unprecedented.
“No president in history has ever built such an alliance for the State of Israel and the Jewish people, and no president has courageously stood up for the State of Israel on the global stage as you had Mr. President,” Evans said.
President Trump’s historic recognition of Jerusalem will secure his place in history as the first American president to take that step since the founding of the State of Israel in 1948.
According to the Jerusalem Post, “The Friends of Zion Heritage Centre has become one of the central institutions in the State of Israel, influencing the world and strengthening Israel’s relations globally.” Previous recipients of the award include US President George W. Bush.
“President Trump’s historic declaration regarding Jerusalem takes its place as one of Israel’s historic milestones, from the Balfour Declaration to President Truman’s acceptance of Israel into the family of nations,” the museum said in a statement.
On 6 December, Trump declared his administration’s recognition of Jerusalem as the united capital of Israel adding that the American embassy would be moved to the Holy City from Tel Aviv. The decision contravenes numerous UN resolutions and international law and has received global condemnation and caused a wave of protests.
