One News Now | Did Nancy Pelosi offer up her own ‘fake news’?

A spokesman for America’s largest Hispanic evangelical group says Nancy Pelosi’s take on a recent conversation between the two is off the mark.

Last week, the House speaker told the Washington press corps that she had appealed to Hispanic evangelicals to stop the Trump administration from conducting ICE raids – scheduled for Sunday – that had millions of Hispanic immigrants in its crosshairs. Those evangelical leaders, Pelosi said, were worried about indiscriminate and cruel raids that aimed to separate families.

“Basically they were very concerned that this goes too far because these raids were not what they signed up for with President Trump,” said the California Democrat – adding that Hispanics indicated they were worried ICE agents would break down the doors of their churches.

OneNewsNow spoke to Tony Suarez, vice president of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference. Suarez confirmed that the NHCLC was the group Speaker Pelosi contacted.

“The speaker reached out to the NHCLC and spoke to our president, Reverend Sam Rodriguez,” Suarez shared. “The Lord used him as a bridgebuilder, as a mediator between the House, the White House, and the Hispanic community.”

But Pelosi’s call to the NHCLC was based on inaccurate information – something Suarez says the House speaker must have known at the time. “It was within a matter of hours that this misinformation that ‘millions’ were at risk was clarified to say, No, it’s a few thousand,” he stated.

According to Suarez, the Hispanic community strongly supports those raids.

Pelosi finished her press conference by saying if things got out of hand, she’d call the NHCLC again to enlist their help. Suarez says she will likely get a very different reception the next time around.

“We’re in the situation we’re in today not because of anyone who occupies Pennsylvania Avenue, but because of those hundreds of members of the House and the Senate who occupy Capitol Hill,” he stated.

NHCLC president Samuel Rodriguez recently toured a migrant detention center in Texas where he discovered that another House Democrat – Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (New York) – had conveyed false information about the living conditions there. He says he “saw something drastically different” from she reported having seen.

“We found no soiled diapers, no deplorable conditions, and no lack of basic necessities,” Rodriguez shared in a press release.
