World Health Day Events Showcase Tips to Improve Everyday Health
GFA-supported instructor talks about health and hygiene.
WILLS POINT, TX – Workers supported by Gospel for Asia (GFA) held free health seminars, distributed vitamins and gave away mosquito nets to hundreds of impoverished villagers and workers in Asia earlier this month on World Health Day. The seminars were part of an effort to bring greater health to impoverished areas through education and medical services.
“In many cases, simple changes can create a profound difference in everyday health,” said K.P. Yohannan, founder and international director of GFA. “Christ calls upon us to care for the poor, and events like World Health Day give us the opportunity to extend a helping hand in a specific area.”
GFA-supported workers staffed dozens of medical clinics throughout the region, while providing health seminars that emphasized prevention. Attendees were briefed on hygienic routines to reduce the potential for disease and infection, beginning with steps as simple as hand-washing.
“We have to keep our house compound clean,” said one attendee. “To keep our children healthy, we have to take care of our children properly. We have to give them a bath daily, cut their nails and wash their hands before and after food.”
GFA-supported workers also distributed vitamins to more than 500 children, while also giving free mosquito nets to attendees. Nets are among the most effective low-tech ways to combat mosquito-borne diseases.
The World Health Organization, which organizes events globally to highlight key health issues, sponsors World Health Day.
“We are blessed to have an expanded opportunity to help the least of these, as Christ commanded, on World Health Day,” said Yohannan. “Through the efforts of donors and volunteers, hundreds can experience the good news that Jesus has brought into the world.”
