Jentezen Franklin, an evangelical adviser to President Trump, on Friday told Hill.TV that he has had disagreements with President Trump over various issues including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and the response to the racially charged protests in Charlottesville, Va., in 2017.
“I’ve had conversations with him about DACA, and I actually believe we should have a pathway of citizenship,” Franklin told hosts Buck Sexton and Jamal Simmons on “Rising.”
“They’re in my church, they’re in my family, they’re in my life, they’re in my home with my kids, friends. I care about these kids,” he continued.
Trump used DACA and a possible pathway to citizenship as a bargaining chip in negotiations with Democrats last month to end the partial government shutdown.
Franklin also said he has had conversations with Trump about the protests in Charlottesville and the president’s comments after the events.
“I’ve actually had conversations with the president about Charlottesville, and we were in total disagreement,” Franklin said.
Trump sparked controversy in the aftermath of the protests, which were sparked by a white supremacist gathering, by saying both sides were to blame.
White evangelicals have been one of Trump’s most loyal voting blocs, frequently praising his conservative views.
Franklin said that although he disagrees with the president on some issues, Trump, in his experience, has always been receptive towards truth.
“But when you speak the truth to this president, he has a tendency to bend towards the truth when he hears it,” he said. “His instinct, usually, is he knows truth when he hears it.”
