LOS ANGELES (KCAL/CNN) – A $500 million museum dedicated to the Bible is getting ready to open on the National Mall in Washington in November.
And a traveling exhibit, a replica of the museum’s towering doors, is on display at the Los Angeles Convention Center to help get the word out. The Museum of the Bible calls them “The Gutenberg Gates,” and they bear the passages of biblical scripture in Latin.
A spokesperson said on Friday that the exhibit and the museum are for everybody.
“They (gates) are 40 feet tall and total 16 tons. And so this is our way of saying to all of America our doors are open to you whatever you believe, whoever you are, whatever you care about, the Museum of the Bible is interesting – this (is) for you. Nov. 17, Washington DC, and the tour begins right here in LA,” said Johnnie Moore, spokesperson for the Museum of the Bible.
The Museum of the Bible was founded by Hobby Lobby president Steve Green. It will include a replica of the Nazareth village, biblical gardens and a gift shop.
“It’s not about proselytizing anyone or preaching any message, is just about showing the history of this beautiful, amazing and interesting book. It’s the most banned book, the most burned book, the most read book, the most sold book,” Moore said. “And you can’t understand our world unless you understand this book.”
The museum in the nation’s capital will be housed in a 430,000-square-foot building just two blocks from the National Mall and three blocks from the Capitol. It will provide guests with an immersive and personalized experience as they explore the history, narrative, and impact of the Bible, the museum web site says.
