LOS ANGELES — Each year in the United States the week of September 11th arrives in infamy, reminding all Americans of the cost of extremism, an extremism that remains on broad display in its various forms throughout our world today.

This year, the Simon Wiesenthal Center will join with an Arab nation connected by a bridge to Saudi Arabia — the Kingdom of Bahrain — in calling for the end of extremism and for greater religious tolerance in the Middle East and abroad.

Dual events on Wednesday, Sept. 13 are the result of months of dialogue between Jewish, Muslim, and Christian leaders, who met extensively both in the Middle East and in the United States.

A morning press conference will make a public call for religious tolerance throughout the world — and in our nation — and an evening ceremony will offer a practical action in response to it as Jewish, Christian and Muslim leaders unveil and sign the historic “Bahrain Declaration for Religious Tolerance.”

WHAT:

A historic ceremony where the “Bahrain Declaration on Religious Tolerance” —authored by an Arab head of state, King Hamad of Bahrain — will be released publicly for the first time.

The document calls for people of all faiths to show respect for and protection of the rights of everyone to practice their religious affiliations in dignity and peace.

The highlights of the evening will include a signing ceremony, led by a mother of an ISIS suicide bomber from Saudi Arabia and the mother of a victim of that terrorist attack, which took place in a Mosque.

Leading Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu and Bahai leaders will be participating. A 30-person delegation from Bahrain will join Arab ambassadors to the United States from Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Bahrain along with the Bahrainian ambassadors from London, Paris, and Belgium. Other diplomats, including the Israeli ambassador to the United States, are slated to attend.

This initiative comes at a time when terrorist groups like ISIS, Hezbollah and Hamas continue to leverage a virtually unchallenged narrative that invokes G-d’s name to recruit young people to commit unspeakable acts of barbarism.
