[Media Advisory] Museum of the Bible Brings Gutenberg Gates to New York City’s Times Square Ahead of DC Opening

Oct. 31, 2017

New York—As part of a national, five-city campaign, Museum of the Bible will tour replicas of its Gutenberg Gates in New York City this weekend. Made to the scale of the grand structures flanking the entryway of the forthcoming D.C. museum, the replica gates will be erected in Times Square on Friday through Sunday before moving on to the National Mall in Washington. The gates bear the passages of Genesis 1:1-31 in Latin, as found in the Gutenberg Bible, the first major book printed using moveable metal type. While the touring gates were constructed using truss, plywood, truss wrap, exterior vinyl and a lightweight brick façade, the Gutenberg Gates at Museum of the Bible are made of bronze and are the largest panels of their kind in the world. Artist Larry Kirkland was commissioned to create the entrance gates that will greet museum guests when Museum of the Bible opens Nov. 17, 2017.
