WASHINGTON, Feb. 17, 2016—
“Questions of Faith” is an exhibit that addresses the conflict between faith communities in Southern Germany of the Middle Ages. A joint project between the Ulmer Museum and the Museum of the Bible in Washington, the unique perspective of this exhibit concentrates on similarities of these religious groups. The presentation will be curated by Dr. Felicitas Heimann-Jelinek, formerly chief curator at the Jewish Museum in Vienna.
Rare examples of significant and artistically outstanding manuscripts, paintings, and sculptures from Judaism, Islam and Christianity will be on display to document that theological differences were not only expressed in public discussions but are also reflected in literature and in the visual arts. Despite cultural, religious or political boundaries, the items will show that intellectual opportunities existed for different faith communities to engage in fruitful discussion. The objects on display document a multi-faceted network between the various religious groups and their cultural influence on each other.
Altogether 80 priceless objects will be on display, among them numerous international loan items from Vienna; New York; St. Gallen, Switzerland; Nuremberg, Germany; Amsterdam; Tel Aviv, Israel; Cracow, Poland; Brussels; Parma, Italy; and Heidelberg, Germany. The exhibit will also engage a younger audience with film clips, edgy music videos, and interactive computer games. Ten countries—Hungary, Austria, Israel, Switzerland, U.S., Belgium, Holland, Poland, Italy and Germany—contribute to this project and provide a contemporary international forum highlighting inter-faith dialogue of the Middle Ages.
The display text is consistently labeled both in German and English and the catalogue of the exhibition will be written in both languages and will be published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht.

Tuesday through Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm
Thursday: extended opening for special exhibitions until 8 pm
