[Press Release] Bishop Joseph D’Souza Issues Call to Prayer as Record Rains Flood India

Sep. 1, 2017

HYDERABAD, India — The Most Rev. Dr. Joseph D’Souza, moderating bishop of the Good Shepherd Church of India and president of the All India Christian Council, issued a call to prayer, asking the global church to pray for those affected by the floods in South Asia.

“The people of India, Bangladesh and Nepal are in desperate need of our prayers and support. The scale of the devastation and loss caused by these record floodings is beyond words. Millions have seen the little they possessed swept away by mud and water. They’ve been driven out of their homes, lost access to an education, food and jobs and experienced the heartbreak of losing loved ones.

“Christians must respond to this disaster with their prayers and compassion. In this time of great heartbreak, the church must demonstrate we do serve a living and loving God, who listens to the cry of those who are in need and who sends his comfort to those who are hurting.”

More than 1,200 people have died in India, Bangladesh and Nepal, and an estimated 40 million have been impacted by the record rainfall. The floods have also destroyed or damaged 18,000 schools, leaving 1.8 million children out of school.

The Good Shepherd Church of India is helping victims of the flooding in India.
