[Press Release] Dr. James Dobson of Family Talk To Receive The Faith & Freedom Coalition Winston Churchill Lifetime Achievement Award

Jun. 9, 2017

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Family Talk is pleased to announce that Dr. James Dobson, founder and president of Family Talk, will be awarded the prestigious Winston Churchill Lifetime Achievement Award at the Faith & Freedom Coalition’s Patriot’s Gala on Saturday, June 10.

Faith & Freedom Coalition’s Road To Majority is the nation’s premier grassroots conference for mobilizing and equipping people of faith and conservative activists to influence state and federal policy and to help elect like-minded conservatives.

The Patriots Gala will feature keynote remarks by Vice President Mike Pence and marks the culmination of the three-day Road to Majority conference. Many of the country’s most prominent conservative political leaders, dignitaries, speakers and faith leaders will be in attendance.

Faith and Freedom Coalition Chairman Ralph Reed will present Dr. Dobson with the Winston Churchill Award for his lifetime of service to the American family and to the evangelical conservative movement. Previous recipients of the award include Phyllis Schlafly, Beverly LaHaye and Pat Robertson.

“Dr. Dobson has served at the forefront of the evangelical conservative movement in America for decades fighting for traditional marriage, the sanctity of human life and encouraging godly families,” said Chairman Reed. ”There is no one in this country who has done more to promote the values that Faith & Freedom stands for, and no one more deserving of this honor than Dr. Dobson.”

James Dobson has always been unique, and in many ways unprecedented. As a son, grandson and great-grandson of ministers, Dobson has built his ministry outside of the pulpit.

Fittingly, 2017 marks a landmark anniversary for Dr. James Dobson: 40 years in broadcasting. For the past four decades, Dr. Dobson’s primary objective has been to strengthen marriage and parenting through psychologically sound, biblically based counsel. He has also worked tirelessly to advance and defend righteousness in the culture at large.

After earning his Ph.D. in child development and research design from the University of Southern California, Dobson became an associate clinical professor of pediatrics at USC’s Keck School of Medicine, where he served for 14 years. He then served for 17 years on the attending staff of the prestigious Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, in the divisions of child development and medical genetics.

Alarmed by the rapid deterioration of the family, Dr. Dobson felt compelled to devote himself fully to its preservation and made the difficult decision to leave academia. After opening a humble, two-room office in Arcadia, CA, he embarked on what would become his primary vocation and calling when on March 26,1977, the first “Focus on the Family” radio broadcast was transmitted across 34 Christian stations. That same program would eventually be carried on 7,000 stations in 150 countries, and was heard by more than 220 million people a day.

After leading Focus on the Family for more than 30 years, he left the organization he founded and started Family Talk the following day. Family Talk’s flagship broadcast is now carried on 1,300 outlets, Monday through Friday, every week.

Throughout his long and storied career, The New York Times referred to Dr. Dobson as, “The most influential evangelical leader in the country.” He has also advised five U.S. presidents, beginning with Ronald Reagan in 1984 continuing to this day, where he serves on President Trump’s Faith Advisory Board.

In total, Dr. Dobson has written over 30 books; published hundreds of articles, films and video series; and produced more than 8,000 radio broadcasts. His voice is unmatched in Christendom, the world over.

In response to increasing mobile and online demand for Dr. Dobson’s 40 years of biblically based, family centric content, Family Talk recently launched the Dobson Digital Library (DDL). This project brings the lifeworks of Dr. Dobson to a new generation of families around the world.

Dr. Dobson also recently partnered with Liberty University to establish the James C. Dobson Center for Child Development, Marriage, & Family Studies. The center provides a certified, accredited curriculum through Liberty University’s online program designed to equip men and women with the knowledge and tools necessary to positively impact the family and society, for Christ.

“I am deeply honored to be recognized by the Faith and Freedom Coalition in this way,” said Dr. Dobson. “I have been blessed to serve the institution of the family alongside so many talented and passionate individuals all of these years. It’s on their behalf, as well as all the families that kept our ministry on the air for 40 years that I will humbly accept this award.”

“When they start presenting you with lifetime achievement awards, it is of course a great honor, but it can also be a bit misleading,” added Dr. Dobson. “Shirley and I, along with everyone here at Family Talk, are still very much looking forward because there remains so much more to do. I pray that the work we are doing now and in the years ahead will continue to be a blessing to many generations to come.”

James and Shirley Dobson are the proud parents of two grown children, Danae and Ryan, and two grandchildren. The Dobsons reside in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
