[Press Release] Museum Of The Bible Releases ‘Presidential Inaugurations And The Bible’

Jan. 17, 2017

In the lead up to The 58th Presidential Inauguration, Museum of the Bible releases 9-day YouVersion reading plan.

WASHINGTON D.C. – With The 58th Presidential Inauguration just days away, Museum of the Bible releases a content series titled – “Presidential Inaugurations and the Bible.”

Available exclusively through the YouVersion Bible App and on Museum of the Bible’s social media accounts, “Presidential Inaugurations and the Bible” invites readers on a 9-day reading plan that explores how different presidents throughout U.S. history have used the Bible when being sworn into office.

“The U.S. Presidential Inauguration is a time where Americans observe not only the peaceful transition of power, but also pay tribute to the Bible. The Museum of the Bible has a unique opportunity to share the importance of the Bible in these moments in history and how they impacted America,” says Steven Bickley, vice president for marketing at Museum of the Bible.

It was actually George Washington, the 1st President of the United States, who started the tradition of placing his hand upon the Bible during the inauguration ceremony when in 1789 he was sworn in on a Bible reportedly opened to Genesis 49:13. Fittingly, day-1 of the YouVersion reading plan begins with President Washington followed by presidents Lincoln, Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Carter, Reagan and ending with President Barack Obama.

“Starting with Washington, most presidents have placed their hand upon the Bible while being sworn into office,” says Bickley. “What’s less known and perhaps most interesting, are the stories behind which Bible they chose to use and the specific passage where the Bible was opened to for the ceremony. These details reveal so much insight into each president and it’s what makes this reading plan such a fascinating journey through the Bible itself.”

You can access all of this series by signing up for the email version at www.museumofthebible.org/thebok, following Museum of the Bible on social media, or directly through the YouVersion mobile app and desktop version.
