APOPKA, FL – Pastor Paula White and New Destiny Christian Center teamed up with The Impact Church of Apopka, Ocoee High School, Second Harvest Food Bank, and other local ministries this week to meet the needs of those still impacted by Hurricane Irma in Central Florida. The New Destiny campus was opened as a center of provision and help for thousands of area residents who came searching for assistance, most still without power or water service.
Over two days, over 300 volunteers rolled up their sleeves at New Destiny and distributed 70,000 pounds of food and water to 876 families. Box trucks donated by the Edgewater High School band carried volunteers and deliveries of food and water to low-income areas and communities that could not make the trip to the church. Meat, cheese, and bread were handed out to Lovell Elementary School students and their families and the senior citizens at Zellwood Station. Teams also delivered relief to the Chatel North and Mid Florida Lakes mobile home parks, which are still without power.
Testimonies of gratitude were heard everywhere. One woman became overwhelmed with emotion as trucks were loaded up with supplies to take to her community after her requests to three different agencies went unanswered. A young man in a low-income apartment complex ran out to the team and started crying because he had been without power for three days and his food and water supply was depleted.
Serving the most basic felt needs of the community is a tangible way of being the hands and feet of Jesus, and the people of New Destiny Christian Center are following the Apostle Paul’s exhortation to “let our people learn to devote themselves to good works, so as to help cases of urgent need…” (Titus 3:14 ESV).
