Skeptics like the late Dr. Stephen Hawking dismissed the idea out of hand, calling it “a fairy story.” Atheists like Dr. Richard Dawkins assert “I don’t know what happens to us but I know that our consciousness is wrapped up in our brains and I know that our brains rot.” Theologians note that most world religions affirm some version of life after death, but evolutionary psychologists dismiss heaven “as a product of the individual capacity for experiences of self-transcendence.” Publishers and film studios feed us a steady diet of people who “died,” went to heaven, and returned with stories to tell. Pop psychologists tell us that if there is a heaven, then every good person — and every dog — is going there.
