LOS ANGELES — A Google insider has exposed disturbing practices his employer and its subsidiary YouTube has used to intentionally target and censor conservative voices like PragerU.
Speaking anonymously to Project Veritas’ James O’Keefe, the whistleblower claimed that Google identifies opinions it doesn’t want to have wide appeal and deliberately moves to suppress them, deciding which content users are “allowed” to see.
Along with myriad other conservative figures and voices, the Google insider confirmed PragerU videos receive “heightened analysis” by the artificial intelligence program Viacon, which polices YouTube distribution and singles out PragerU videos for censorship.
Google/YouTube, according to the insider, uses artificial intelligence to transcribe uploaded video content, search the transcriptions for conservative buzzwords and flag such content as “news talk” or “right wing.” Then what the insider calls “rebiasing/unfairness” algorithms are applied to the content that effectively suppresses its availability across the platform.
“People still think that Google is an objective source of information, and it is not,” the insider warns.
“This revelation is unfortunate, but not surprising,” says PragerU CMO Craig Strazzeri. “It’s been obvious for years that Google/YouTube has been actively suppressing our content. Now we have clearer details and an admission from a Google employee.”
Over 100 PragerU videos are currently restricted by Google/YouTube and are labeled as “dangerous” or “derogatory.” The tech company also prevents PragerU from monetizing many of its videos.
PragerU currently has two active lawsuits against the tech giant – one in federal court and another in California state court. Oral arguments in PragerU’s federal lawsuit against Google have been scheduled by the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for August 27.
