[Release] Lamenting President Biden’s Pro-Abortion E.O., The National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference and The Congress of Christian Leaders add their voices to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops

Jan. 29, 2021
SACRAMENTO — The President of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, Rev. Samuel Rodriguez, and the President of The Congress of Christian Leaders, Rev. Johnnie Moore, issue the following statement lamenting President Biden’s pro-abortion executive action on the eve of the annual March for Life.

“For forty years Joe Biden held the tenuous line on abortion within the Democratic Party recalling his personal convictions as a practicing Catholic. He supported the Hyde Amendment and he advocated for at least reducing abortions despite the pressure of billions of dollars from the abortion lobby. Yesterday, with the swipe of a pen, President Biden completed the surrender of his convictions on the altar of political expediency inaugurating the most extreme abortion position of any administration preceding his own.

“We agree with the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops [USCCB] that ‘It is grievous that one of President Biden’s first official acts actively promotes the destruction of human lives in developing nations,’ and we agree with the USCCB that “this executive order is antithetical to reason [and] violates human dignity.’

“Yet, what struck us the most was that President Biden didn’t even use the word ‘abortion’ in the Oval Office when he signed his executive order. The whole occasion was insidious in its deflection and prototypical of politicians who don’t want the public to actually know what they are doing. President Biden seemed to studiously avoid even mentioning the word ‘abortion,’ and to this we say: ‘Say the word, Mr. President. Say it!’

“Then there’s what he could have said. He could have established an ‘abortion reduction task force,’ for instance. He didn’t and amidst calls for national unity he issued his cynical order on the eve of the March for Life reneging on the promise he had made for decades to the pro-life Democrats who have supported his rise.

“President Biden now supports repealing the Hyde Amendment, codifying abortion through congressional action, and doing it all without any limitations imposed whatsoever — allowing a child to be aborted up to the moment of birth.

“Tragically it is all happening during a time when the public’s support of abortion is at an all-time low. According to a new Marist poll, only 15% of Americans support abortion ‘at any time during’ a pregnancy, and 76% of Americans support placing some limitations on abortion.

“We especially call on pro-life Christians who pledged their support to candidate Biden to raise their voices loud and to raise their voices, now.”
