[Release] Museum of the Bible to Host One-Time Event: ‘The Lindisfarne Gospels: Godspel Goes West’

Mar. 20, 2018

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Museum of the Bible will present “The Lindisfarne Gospels: Godspel Goes West,” at Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C. on March 24, 2018 from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

As part of the one-time event, leading expert Professor Michelle P. Brown will explore how this beautifully illuminated manuscript preserves the earliest surviving English translation of the Gospels. Made on Holy Island off the Northeast coast of Britain 1,300 years ago, The Lindisfarne Gospels also preserve the best early version of St. Jerome’s Latin Vulgate edition.

The lecture will examine the manuscript’s beginnings as the work of a hermit bishop seeking to celebrate Creation and different Christian traditions working in harmony. Attendees will be shown the fascinating influence of Celtic, Anglo-Saxon, Roman, Byzantine and Near Eastern art during this formative age in Christian culture.

“The Lindisfarne Gospels: Godspel Goes West” is open to all audiences and knowledge levels, from history experts to those curious to explore the history of the Gospels.
