[Release] My Faith Votes Mobilizes Christians to Vote in Douglas County School Board Election

Oct. 25, 2017

DENVER – My Faith Votes is mobilizing Christians in Colorado to vote in a local school board election that could ultimately challenge the constitutionality of the state’s Blaine clause and determine the future of real faith-based school choice in America.

In partnership with CFA Foundation, Colorado’s family policy council, My Faith Votes delivered 25,000 voter guides through 65 churches and private schools to Douglas County, Colorado residents ahead of the Nov. 7 school board election. Four out of seven seats in the Douglas County School Board are up for election.

The election will likely determine if the school district will maintain an appeal to the Colorado Supreme Court’s decision to prevent publicly-funded scholarships from being used for faith-based private schools.

On both a state and national scale, the case could have far-reaching ramifications for faith-based school choice. The appeal challenges Colorado’s Blaine clause, which prohibits state funds from being used in faith-based institutions. If the Blaine clause is proven unconstitutional, the case would make publicly-funded scholarships available through school choice programs for faith-based private schools in Colorado. It could also trigger challenges to similar Blaine clauses in 37 other states.

The Supreme Court sent the appeal back to the Colorado Supreme Court for reconsideration after issuing a 7-2 ruling in Trinity Lutheran Church of Columbia, Inc. v. Comer, another case where the state prohibited the use of public funds for a faith institution.

“Christians in Douglas County, Colorado cannot sit on the sidelines this election. No matter how small it might seem, the Nov. 7 school board election could determine the future of real faith-based school choice not only in Colorado but in America,” said Jason Yates, CEO of My Faith Votes. “This is an opportunity for the local Christian community to unite and make a difference in their local community and state and very possibly on a national level.”

Through voter’s guides, informational articles and local partnerships with churches and private schools, My Faith Votes is equipping and mobilizing Christians in Douglas County, Colorado to cast biblically-informed votes.
