[Release] NHCLC announces Joppa Health Share, a ministry to provide access to affordable health care for the Hispanic, evangelical community

Apr. 2, 2020
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference has announced the formation of Joppa Health Share, a ministry in order to provide access to affordable health care to members of the 45,000 churches within the NHCLC network.

Joppa Health Share is inspired by the solidarity and generosity modeled by the early believers in the book of Acts, which Scripture says were “united in heart and mind” and “felt that what they owned was not their own, so they shared everything they had” (Acts 4). The ministry utilizes a cost-sharing model for medical bills, designed so members can meet each other’s needs through a monthly contribution.

“Simply put, Joppa Health Share is the church being the church,” said Rev. Samuel Rodriguez, president of NHCLC. “We are returning to the biblical model of the early church. God wants us to care for one another and meet each other’s needs. This model already works for one million Americans enrolled in similar health care sharing ministries.”

Joppa Health Share is not insurance. It does not have enrollment restrictions or penalties, making the sign-up process as easy and simple as needed. While not an insurance plan, the health share ministry can save money for members over traditional insurance plans and is competitive with other health sharing ministries.

Joppa Health Share offers multiple comprehensive plans tailored for individuals, couples and families. Some of the basic benefits members enjoy are: free lab testing, $10 doctor visits, wellness resources, vision and dental care discounts, no cost prescriptions and telemedicine through virtual appointments for those wanting to connect with a doctor without having to go to an office, a safe and timely alternative to in-office visits during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It’s really exciting to be able to be practical in our help to fellow believers,” said Dr. Gus Reyes, project leader for Joppa Health Share. “For example, everybody knows right now you are not supposed to leave your house. So if you get sick or have medical issues what do you do? Well Joppa Health Share has a new telemedicine option. You can actually call a doctor and get the help you need right away. This is just one piece of the Joppa Health ministry. It’s a plan that provides medical cost sharing for the entire family, for the entire church and for the entire community. It’s timely, and we want to help people right now.”
