DALLAS — Episode six of the hit TLC reality show, “Rattled,” which aired Aug. 14, continues the story of Christian couple Julia and Ryan Sadler, who work together ministering to youth at the First Baptist Church of Dallas where Julia’s father, Dr. Robert Jeffress is the senior pastor. After three miscarriages in one year, the Sadlers become pregnant with triplets, which are delivered by emergency C-section at 30 weeks. One of the triplets is released from the hospital after seven weeks in the NICU, and the other two are finally cleared to come home three weeks later.
At long last, the day that Ryan and Julia have prayed for — the day when they can finally have all three of their triplets out of the hospital and home — is upon them. As they pray, thanking God for the little lives of their triplets, they are immediately launched into a whirlwind of nonstop demands and responsibilities. They are, as Ryan says, “Excited but scared.”
Julia has no experience with children. She never changed a diaper; never baby-sat. Her first experience is with triplets. But Julia is a force of nature, creating a schedule which is both “meticulous and monotonous” and keeping everyone on it. As Ryan says, “When Julia sets her mind to something, there’s no stopping her.” The Sadlers are a team — he gets up at 6 a.m. and takes care of the triplets until Julia takes over when Ryan goes to work at 9 a.m. Julia’s entire day is basically devoted to feeding the triplets. Their house now reverberates with the “wonderful noise” of a family of five
Ryan and Julia have been swept into one crisis after another with no time grieve, heal, or even come to grips with any of them. First there was the trauma of three miscarriages, then the apprehension of a high-risk pregnancy, then the constant anxiety of 50 days of enforced bedrest at the hospital, and then the uncertainty an emergency C-section, and finally the terror of having children in the NICU for 10 weeks, including watching one of their children being resuscitated when he stopped breathing. Now that they are finally home, the constant demands of the triplets and sleep deprivation make processing all that has happened to them even harder.
Tens of thousands of Americans give birth to multiples every year, and the Sadlers have been barraged with emails and posts from other NICU parents who have resonated with their roller coaster experience.
As Episode 6 ends, the Sadlers are learning to meet the demands of parenting triplets, but it is clear that their own healing has only just begun.
Episode 7 of “Rattled” debuts Aug. 21 at 10 p.m. Eastern on TLC.
