LOS ANGELES — In the center of the national debate about abortion rights is Planned Parenthood, the organization that promotes itself as one of the nation’s leading provider of “women’s healthcare” while performing the most abortion procedures of any organization in America. In PragerU’s newest video, What You Need To Know About Planned Parenthood, Lila Rose, founder and president of LiveAction, exposes the deception behind the organization, from marketing and communications to the the statistics it publishes about the procedures it administers.
“[The] organization calls itself a healthcare provider,” Rose explains, “but it’s not involved in preserving life; it’s involved in ending it,” Among the many services the organization boasts of providing are adoption referrals, cancer screenings and breast exams. While this is true, it performs less than two percent of the nation’s procedures, respectively, in each of these categories.
The organization also talks about providing ultrasounds, “But the last thing they want to
do is show a pregnant woman an image of her growing child,” says Rose. “So, they don’t. The ultrasound is only for Planned Parenthood’s use – to better facilitate patients’ abortions.”
In fact, Planned Parenthood provides more abortions than any other organization in the country, over 321,000 abortions per year, or more than one third of all abortions in America. “That’s over 880 abortions every day,” states Rose. “An abortion every 98 seconds.”
While the total number of abortions in America has been decreasing over recent years, Planned Parenthood’s share of abortions has increased from 23 percent in 2006 to 34 percent in 2016.“When Planned Parenthood says its devoted to women’s reproductive rights,” Rose warns, “what it means is it’s devoted to aborting as many babies as possible.”
Planned Parenthood claims abortions account for only three percent of the services they provide to women, but Rose claims that this, much like everything else about Planned Parenthood, is a deception. To come up with this statistic, Planned Parenthood counts every “discrete clinical interaction” as a service. For example, all the services surrounding abortion, such as providing a pregnancy test or giving a prescription after an abortion, are considered independent “discrete clinical interactions.”
Even The Washington Post, a Planned Parenthood ally, called this figure extremely misleading. Rich Lowry of the National Review illustrated a comparative statistic with baseball. He likened it to Major League Baseball saying, “they sell 20 million hot dogs but only play 2,430 games, so baseball is only 0.012 percent of what they do.”
The U.S. government is not permitted to spend taxpayer dollars on abortions, and still, while Planned Parenthood’s annual clientele has dropped 23 percent over the past ten years, its taxpayer funding has increased from $336 million in 2006 to $543 million in 2016. To Rose, this explains Planned Parenthood’s motivation for presenting their “phony” statistics in such a deceptive way.
“The reality is, just about everything about Planned Parenthood is a deception,” she concludes. “Its purpose, its funding, its very name,” concludes Rose. “That’s why Planned Parenthood’s biggest enemy isn’t conservatives or religious people. Its biggest enemy is truth.”
