SACRAMENTO —- Rev. Samuel Rodriguez, President of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, issues the following statement in opposition to the current version of voting rights legislation endorsed by the White House proposed by Senate Democrats:

“Beginning this weekend, no one who works for the federal government in Washington, D.C. will be able to eat at a restaurant or attend an event in the city without demonstrating proof of vaccination along with photo identification.

“Yet, these same politicians are demanding the total elimination of photo identification requirements for voting. The absurdity is breathtaking. These same hypocritical politicians are also demanding the rules of the Senate itself be changed in order to pass this legislation despite these very same Senators supporting and utilizing these very rules hundreds of times in their decades of political service.

“Americans see through this charade. This isn’t about public service. It is about a lust for power.

“Let me be clear: Like the vast majority of all Americans, Latino evangelicals oppose federal legislation that would do away with the requirement of forms of identification for voting. Latino evangelicals also oppose legislation, in total defiance of the U.S. Constitution, allowing non-citizens to vote.

“It is racist for white, elite liberals to believe that people of color are incapable of providing identification to vote. It is reprehensible to continue to racialize every aspect of American politics in order to advance other political agendas. Our politicians must not embrace racism to address racism. These actions do not protect American democracy, they undermine it.”
