HYDERABAD, India — The Most Rev. Joseph D’Souza, moderating bishop of the Good Shepherd Church of India and president of the All India Christian Council, releases the following statement reflecting on Rev. Billy Graham’s impact on India after the evangelist passed away on Wednesday.
“Billy Graham came to India not long after the British partitioned the Indian subcontinent, a move which overnight created the world’s largest democracy. Rev. Graham preached about total equality in Jesus. For a young nation still trying to find a unified identity for its people, this message resonated with power and conviction. He sidestepped India’s countless distinctions of caste, language, heritage, religion and culture, and reminded Indians that in the eyes of God everyone is equal.
“In a time when our world is increasingly becoming more fractured and polarized, Rev. Graham’s message carries as much relevance today as it did 60 years ago. We need more Billy Grahams who will remind all of us — from presidents to queens and every individual — of God’s great love for all his children.
“India’s Christian community mourns Rev. Billy Graham’s passing. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Graham family, and we thank them for sharing his ministry and life with our people.”
