AUSTIN, Texas — Dr. Andrea Ramirez of the NHCLC Faith and Education Coalition released the following statement following President Trump’s comments on education during his address to Congress:
“As a coalition of educators, pastors, teachers, and parents, we are encouraged by President Trump’s comments on education made before the joint session of Congress. Calling out education as the civil rights issue of our time and specifically highlighting the challenges of Hispanic and other minority students is a crucial focus needed by our nation. Anyone concerned about education equity should be encouraged by this immediate priority.
“The Faith and Education Coalition stands prepared and willing to work with the administration and with Sec. Betsy DeVos to apply our findings, experience and insights to do everything we can to ensure that every child in America — regardless of race, income or zip code — has equal access to a quality education.
“It’s important that now, moving forward, we work hard to apply specific policy measures to these important remarks and that we hold our elected officials accountable to make good on their promises. Every student in America should have the right and opportunity to reach their God-given potential, and it’s the responsibility of all us — from the president to every parent and community stakeholder — to ensure they do.”
