DALLAS — Dr. Robert Jeffress, senior pastor of First Baptist Dallas, issues the following statement in support of the Supreme Court’s decision protecting the religious liberty of Jack Philips, a Christian baker who refused to participate in a gay wedding by creating a wedding cake:
“Today’s decision by the Supreme Court to affirm baker Jack Philip’s religious right not to participate in a gay wedding is the most significant example of ‘promise made, promised fulfilled’ by President Trump to Evangelical Christians and will guarantee their support in 2020.
“Evangelicals voted for Trump by the largest margin in history in 2016 primarily because of his promise to protect religious liberty, which is under constant attack, and to appoint conservative Supreme Court Justices and federal judges. Today’s court decision will energize even more conservative Christians to rally around him in 2020.
“This case was an egregious violation of religious liberty, and it should have been thrown out long before it reached the Supreme Court. As the Court itself noted at the very beginning of Phillips’ legal ordeal, ‘some of the commissioners at the Commission’s formal, public hearings endorsed the view that religious beliefs cannot legitimately be carried into the public sphere or commercial domain, disparaged Phillips’ faith as despicable and characterized it as merely rhetorical, and compared his invocation of his sincerely held religious beliefs to defenses of slavery and the Holocaust. No commissioners objected to the comments.’
“That the case went this far is ample evidence that the need for conservative judges and elected officials at all levels is greater than ever, and why support of our president is more critical than ever.”
