GAINESVILLE, Ga. — Jentezen Franklin, senior pastor of Free Chapel, releases the following statement celebrating the Trump administration’s endorsement of prison sentencing reform and encouraging legislators to pass the First Step Act:
“After years of talking about prison reform as a lofty ambition, we are finally at the crossroads of being able to make this dream a reality. I’m so pleased with the hard work President Trump, Jared Kushner, Ivanka Trump, Paula White and other faith leaders and a bipartisan group of lawmakers have done to craft the First Step Act. This is the fruit of a diverse coalition of Americans who believe those in prison deserve a second chance at life. Overhauling mandatory minimum sentencing, greater funding for anti-recidivism programs and treating drug addiction more as a disease to be cured than a crime to be punished — These are just a few of the First Step Act reforms that are long overdue.
Now it’s time for Congress to do their part and get this over the finish line. I urge every member of congress to pass the First Step Act and get the bill to the President’s desk.”
