[Statement] My Faith Votes Calls on Congress to Find a Permanent and Compassionate Solution for Dreamers

Sep. 6, 2017

DALLAS — Jason Yates, CEO of the nonpartisan movement My Faith Votes, releases the following statement on President Trump’s decision on DACA:

“President Trump’s action on DACA is understood given the legal challenges it faces, and we thank him for giving Congress a six-month window to finally enact legislation that permanently fixes the shortcomings of DACA.

“DACA was not a viable, long-term solution to a challenge in our country that affects so many DREAMers. The program was destined to be overturned in court, and had President Trump not acted, hundreds of thousands of DREAMers would find themselves with even less hope. Allowing this program to continue would’ve been a disservice to our nation and to the nearly 800,000 DREAMers who’ve been waiting for Congress to act for a legislated solution on their behalf.

“As Christians, we stand for the dignity of every human being and we want a final, compassionate solution to be found for DREAMers. But we also understand the rule of law and know that hasty, halfhearted remedies — as DACA currently stands — will not solve these issues.

“We join the president in calling on Congress to get their act together and quickly pass immigration legislation. From the beginning, it’s been their responsibility to find a humane and comprehensive solution to our immigration system. We find ourselves in this current situation because of their inaction. Now lives and futures are at stake — there’s no time to waste.”
