[Statement] My Faith Votes: Rollback Contraceptive Mandate Is About Protecting our First Amendment Rights

Oct. 6, 2017
DALLAS — Jason Yates, CEO of the nonpartisan movement My Faith Votes, comments on the administration’s decision to roll back the Affordable Care Act’s contraceptive mandate:

“While many will paint the administration’s decision to roll back the Affordable Care Act’s mandate to cover abortion drugs and contraceptives as part of the health care bill controversy or even as an attack on women’s rights, we must not lose sight of what it’s really all about: protecting our First Amendment rights.
“The Affordable Care Act mandate forced countless of business owners to pay for abortion drugs and contraceptives, even if doing so went directly against their deeply held religious beliefs or moral convictions. In essence, it said the government had the power to curb back our guaranteed First Amendment freedoms when convenient or when it fit a political agenda.
“Since Day One, the president has said he will defend religious liberty, and today he has demonstrated his commitment to that promise. We are grateful to see the administration stand up and defend the freedoms enshrined in the Constitution for We the People.”

My Faith Votes—whose founding honorary national chairman was Dr. Ben Carson — is a nonpartisan movement focused on motivating Christians in America to participate in local and national elections and be active members of society. By partnering with local churches, pastors and national faith leaders, My Faith Votes mobilizes and resources Christians to lead the conversation on the place of faith in culture and politics. In the 2016 election, My Faith Votes was largely credited with activating a sizable percentage of the 25 million Evangelicals who were registered to vote in previous elections but had chosen not to, prompting a record turnout by Evangelicals.
