[Statement] Pastor Jack Graham on NIFLA v. Becerra SCOTUS Hearing: The Reproductive FACT Act Is an Assault on 1st Amendment

Mar. 20, 2018

PLANO, Texas — Jack Graham, pastor of Prestonwood Baptist Church, issues the following statement on today’s Supreme Court hearing on NIFLA v. Becerra regarding the California Reproductive FACT Act which requires pregnancy centers to inform and point clients to abortion facilities:

“When our Founding Fathers penned the words in the First Amendment, they meant what they wrote: no law shall be made to prohibit the free exercise of religion or the freedom of speech. The Reproductive FACT Act manages to do both in one sitting.

“By forcing pro-life crisis pregnancy centers in California to promote state-provided abortions, the FACT Act flies in the face of free speech and freedom of conscience. Not only does it compel forced speech, but it also infringes on the intimacy of deeply and sincerely-held beliefs. The Fact Act is an assault on the First Amendment mounted by the very lawmakers who are supposed to be protecting those freedoms.

“In 1992, our church, driven by our deeply held belief in the sanctity of human life, founded a crisis pregnancy center in the heart of our community. Since then, we’ve served more than 70,000 clients — from single, pregnant mothers to unsuspecting fathers and married couples. Our staff treats every client with love and respect, and while the decision on whether or not to keep their babies is up to them, we never have nor ever will point them to an abortion facility. As Americans we have the right to believe and say so. If the FACT Act is not struck down in the Supreme Court, pro-life centers in California will lose their First Amendment rights.

“I’m praying that as they listen to the oral arguments of NIFLA v. Becerra, our Supreme Court will remember that, above all else, America was founded upon and for freedom and will decide to strike down this unjust law.”
