[Statement] Rebecca Friedrichs on Mendez v CTA Class-action Lawsuit: Unions Have Defied the U.S. Supreme Court — It’s Time to Hold Them Accountable

Mar. 12, 2019

LOS ANGELES — A class-action lawsuit was filed Monday by the Dhillon Law Group Inc. and the Freedom Foundation on behalf of five California teachers. The lawsuit, Mendez, Bethany et al. v. California Teachers Association et al., would require unions to obtain legally valid consent prior to deducting dues from a teacher’s pay, to refund deductions taken in violation of a teacher’s rights and to notify union members that a portion of dues funds will be used for political lobbying.

Rebecca Friedrichs, founder of For Kids & Country, issues the following statement hailing the Mendez v CTA class action suit:

“Unsurprisingly, state and national teachers’ unions — including the California Teachers Association and the NEA — have deceptively continued to pressure teachers to join their ranks and pay dues. This behavior stands in brazen defiance of the U.S. Supreme Court, which freed public-sector employees like teachers from unaccountable, abusive unions in last year’s Janus ruling. The Court put the burden squarely on unions to inform potential new members that membership and paying dues is not a requirement for employment and that, if they join, some of their dues money will go to political lobbying. The Mendez v CTA case simply aims to hold unions accountable for flouting that ruling and employing chicanery to hoodwink some new teachers to join the unions.

“That’s why I support the Mendez lawsuit wholeheartedly and will pray for these brave teachers who are taking on the unions who’ve degraded, used and abused us for 50 years.”
