Within Hours of an NHCLC Consultation with the Trump Transition team and National Hispanic Faith Leaders, the President-elect Promises to “Work Something Out” for Dreamers

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Rev. Samuel Rodriguez issues the following statement in response to President-elect Donald J. Trump’s promise to “work something out” for dreamers:

“I remain impressed – maybe astonished – by the accessibility and responsiveness of the President-elect and his senior team to our leaders within the Hispanic, Christian community. Our most recent call with the Trump Transition team and more than forty Hispanic, denominational leaders was attended by multiple and senior members of the Trump Transition team. The specific and productive dialogue was acted upon immediately, with policy memos being distributed moments after the call, and with action taken by the President-elect within hours. Of all leaders, Hispanic leaders understand the complexity of these issues and we commend our political leaders when they are willing to better understand the issues themselves and to respond accordingly. This weekend our churches will be filled with hope as we look in the eyes of some of our young people and assure them that they too will still have their chance at the American dream.

“At the NHCLC, we are neither a democratic or republican organization; we are simply Americans and we are Christians who are committed to our faith and to the civil rights of our community. We exercise our prophetic calling with equal criticism reserved for all leaders and all parties, and with equal compliments when they are due.  So far, the incoming administration has given us a place at the table. We appreciate that seat and we commend the President-elect for it. We look forward to working hand-in-hand with the incoming administration and Congress on all policy discussions as it relates to our community, but especially with regard to comprehensive immigration reform.”
