SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Rev. Dr. Samuel Rodriguez, President of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, issues the following statement:
“I am grateful that the Senate has decided to put aside its juvenile ways and instead chose a bipartisan bill to fund the government. I am hopeful this misguided experiment has reminded our leaders what compromise can and must look like. We must stop thinking of our political disagreements as an ‘either-or’ choice or a zero-sum game. It can and must be a ‘both-and’ where both sides give and get aspects of what they want. We must not be forced to choose between 800,000 DREAMers or 8 million CHIP recipients; between keeping families intact and safe from deportation and safety and security at our borders and in our streets. We are all Americans, brothers and sisters, not enemies. We all will win and lose together. Let’s pray that this compromise will mark the beginning of a bipartisan spirit in Washington, and an end to finger pointing and childish bickering. ”
