[Statement] Rev. Samuel Rodriguez Releases Statement on President Trump’s New Immigration Plan

May. 17, 2019

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Rev. Samuel Rodriguez, president of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, releases the following statement in response to President Trump’s new immigration plan:

“In the Rose Garden, the President clearly and eloquently acknowledged that ‘as a national family’ the United States has ‘proudly welcomed newcomers to our shores’ of ‘many people from many places’ and we have by immigration ‘forged one people and one nation under God.’ In that appropriate spirit, the White House today offered the American people an entirely viable rubric for a comprehensive plan that can fix our long broken system. The issues and ideas raised by the administration are entirely rational. I commend these efforts and I call upon Democrats and Republicans to come together in good faith, putting aside their partisan rancor and to finally fix the problems we have created for ourselves.  We mustn’t just think of legal and illegal immigrants, we must think of all of those who exploit our system to traffic women and children, and to fuel the activity of gangs and cartels. It is a profound act of injustice to let this situation persists as it is. We can solve these problems if we simply choose to.”
